Through Safety Around Water, parents and caregivers are encouraged to help their children learn fundamental water safety and swimming skills. During the eight-day course, children will learn how to respond if they find themselves in unexpected w
ater situations -- from how to reach the water's surface if they submerge to safely reaching a pool's edge or exiting any body of water.
In addition to learning lifesaving water safety skills, children can increase their physical activity by swimming. Swimming also motivates children to strive for self-improvement, teaches goal orientation and cultivates a positive mental attitude and high self-esteem. It also teaches life lessons of sport and sportsmanship, so that children can learn how to work well with teammates and coaches and how to deal with winning and losing.
To help achieve its goal to make swim lessons more accessible for all children, the Calcutta YMCA will award a Safety Around Water 3rd grade scholarship to all current 3rd grade students. The scholarship will include a one year youth membership with complementary swim lessons. To obtain this membership please bring your current report card to the Calcutta YMCA.
